Participation in the UPM conference: “Three decades of fight for equality”
The UPM and the Women’s Institute are organising “1995-2025: Three decades of fight for equality”, a conference to highlight the progress made in the field of equality. In addition, the UPM is hosting the exhibition “Por ellas, por todas. Moving towards a feminist future”, which can be visited until 3 November at the ETSAM.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women that we are celebrating this year, the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), through its Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity and Social Commitment, and the Women’s Institute are organising the conference “1995-2025: Three decades of fight for equality”.
This commemorative day aims to highlight the progress made in equality since the historic Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, and to reflect on current and future challenges to achieve real and effective equality. The UPM joins this international commemoration as a space for meetings, dialogue and institutional social commitment.
“To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Beijing is to remember the collective commitment to building a more equitable society where equality is an everyday reality and not a pending goal,”
emphasises the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity and Social Commitment.
“Analysis of the participation of women at the Technical University of Madrid (1995-2025).” A report by Innova-tsn
During the conference, our colleagues María Luisa Paradinas López, Head of Business Development and Marketing and Carla Martín Monteso, Data Scientist, presented the study “Analysis of the participation of women at the Technical University of Madrid (1995-2025).” Prepared by Innova-tsn, the report offers a rigorous and updated look at the evolution of the presence and participation of women in the different university areas of the UPM over the past three decades. The study, the result of a collaboration between the company and the UPM Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity and Social Commitment, combines quantitative and qualitative data to identify progress, pending challenges and lines of action that contribute to further promoting equality policies in higher education.
Exhibition “POR ELLAS, POR TODAS. MOVING TOWARDS A FEMINIST FUTURE”
At the end of the conference, the exhibition “Por Ellas, Por Todas. Moving towards a feminist future” was inaugurated. It can be visited until 3 November in the main hall of the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) of the UPM. Organised by the Women’s Institute, the exhibition is a visual and documentary journey through the milestones, challenges and achievements of feminist movements and public policies for equality in Spain and around the world. This tour begins at the ETSAM as the first university venue and is part of the activities planned nationwide to commemorate the three decades of Beijing’s legacy.
“This exhibition invites us to reflect on what has been achieved and, above all, on what remains to be done. It is a tribute to the women who blazed trails and a call to keep moving towards a feminist future,”
remarks the Women’s Institute. The opening ceremony will be attended by institutional representatives of the UPM, the Women’s Institute, faculty, students and technical staff of administration and services, as well as collaborating entities in the field of equality and diversity.
The continuous work of the UPM Equality and Diversity Unit
Since it was created in 2009, the UPM Equality and Diversity Unit, which currently depends on the Vice-Rectorate for Equality, Diversity and Social Commitment, has played an essential role in the implementation of institutional policies on gender equality and diversity. Among its lines of work are the development of the two UPM Equality Plans, awareness-raising and training of the university community, the two Sexual Harassment and Gender Identity Protocols, the Inclusive Language Guide, and collaboration with national and international organisations in the progress towards a fairer, more diverse and committed university.
The current UPM Equality and Diversity Unit, formerly Equality Unit, shows the institution’s evolution towards a broader and more inclusive approach which integrates diversity as a structural value of the university community. This name change consolidates the University’s commitment to a vision that transcends formal equality between women and men, adding dimensions related to sexual orientation, gender identity, cultural origin and other realities that enrich university life. This transformation responds to the UPM’s desire to be at the forefront of university policies on equality and human rights. The Unit coordinates the implementation of the 2nd Equality Plan of the UPM, the main tool for planning regarding gender equality, work-life balance and diversity. In addition, it develops and applies protocols for preventing and acting against sexual harassment, harassment based on sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, or cyber-bullying. Its work also includes awareness and training in equality, cooperation with the Schools and Faculty through their Network of Gender and Diversity Contact Points and its participation in national and international networks, strengthening a university committed to coexistence, respect and social justice.
Innova-tsn is very proud of the tandem we have in our Chair of Analytics in a Digital Society in collaboration with the Technical University of Madrid, and especially of being able to participate in meetings like this one, which helps us continue building together a future where equality is a reality and not just a goal.
